The Vice article, “Your Vape Pen Might Be Full of Lead,” brings light to a 2024 study conducted by Johns Hopkins University’s Department of Environmental Health and Engineering. In their lab analysis of nearly 200 vape products, researchers found detectable levels of heavy metals; including lead, chromium, and nickel, in over half of the cartridges tested.
Let that sink in: more than 50% of popular vape devices may contain metal particles you inhale directly into your lungs.
These aren’t just trace elements. In some cases, the lead levels in the vapor were “significantly higher” than what’s allowed in safe drinking water. Lead is a neurotoxin. It accumulates in your body over time and can cause brain damage, lowered IQ, behavioral changes, kidney problems, and more.
And because vape manufacturers often source materials cheaply or without regulation, there’s little oversight on what’s actually in your device, especially with the flood of imports from unregulated factories overseas
